Kingston Schools Cup

The 2010 Kingston Schools Cup (formerly Mayor’s Cup) for year 7 boys and girls took place at Chessington Cricket Club on Wednesday 19th May.

7 boys teams from 6 schools (Kingston Grammar brought two teams) and 4 girls teams took part over the course of the day.

In the boys group A, a typically strong Kingston Grammar A romped through to the final with 3 wins out of 3. Richard Challoner were 2nd, Chessington Community College 3rd and Hollyfield 4th.

In group B, Coombe Boys made it through to the final winning both their matches against Southborough who came 2nd and Kingston Grammar B who were 3rd.

The final looked on paper to be a breeze for the only Independent school in the tournament as they racked up yet another 100 plus score off their 8 overs but Coombe Boys were magnificent falling just 26 runs short only due to no less than 5 direct hits in the field from Kingston Grammar. Coombe Boys progress to the next round as Kingston Grammar do not qualify as an independent school.

In the 3rd place play off Southborough fought off Richard Challoner and Kingston Grammar B beat Chessington Community College for 5th.

In the girls tournament Tiffin Girls and Tolworth Girls were the top two from the group stages with 2 wins each and progressed to the final, with Holy Cross and Coombe Girls in the 3rd place play off with one win each.

It has to be said that all four teams played very well and the overall standard was even higher than last year’s tournament which augurs well for the future of girls cricket in the borough.

Tolworth Girls upset the form book by beating holder Tiffin Girls in the final and Coombe Girls came 3rd.

Overall it was a magnificent sight to see so many schools taking part in one event at the same time and we look forward to welcoming more teams and supporters next season.
